COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker told the City Council Monday night that work has finally begun on the Coldwater Board of Public Utilitites solar array project at the former Midwest Foundry site after much discussion over the last five years.
He reported that the sidewalk along Hooker Street has been removed. In addition, fencing is being installed along the railroad and along Hooker Street and white vinyl privacy fencing will be installed behind the residences on South Jefferson.
Baker said soil, gravel and stone are also being used to level the site in preparation for installation of the actual solar panels.
He estimated the work will take a couple of months.
The work has begun just over two years after the City Council approved an agreement with the Marmon Group to lease the land for one dollar and use it for the solar energy field project.
The resolution passed by the Council in July 2015 ended a stalemate with Marmon to resolve the issue that has been a cloud over that area of Coldwater’s First Ward since the Foundry closed in 1989.
