COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A working smoke detector woke up a man Saturday afternoon as a fire broke out in his second story apartment at 19 East Pierce in Coldwater.
Coldwater Fire Marshal Steve Trall says the tenant woke up and called in the fire just before 4:00 p.m.. The property owner who lives on the first floor used a fire extinguisher before Coldwater firefighters arrived.
Heavy smoke and flames were reported on the second floor.
Two engines and a ladder truck were among the units from the Coldwater Fire Department which responded.
An engine from the Quincy Fire Department was also called in.
At one point, firefighters had to chop through the roof in order to get the fire under control. It was called contained at about 4:50 p.m..
No injuries were reported. The preliminary cause of the fire was listed as unintentional due to work which was being performed on the roof.
The damage was contained to the second story. East Pierce was closed to traffic while fire crews were at the scene for nearly three hours.
