COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Sheriff John Pollack told county commissioners Tuesday that the County Jail has to many female prisoners and some have had to be transferred to Lenawee County.
He said the female population was 30 on Monday and 29 on Tuesday. That means seven had to be transferred out which brought the number of Branch County female prisoners in other facilities up to 15.
All of the transferred prisoners are serving sentences. It costs Branch County $35 a day when a prisoner has to be sent to another jail due to overcrowding.
Pollack said the seven females who were transferred on Tuesday had to be sent to Lenawee County because Calhoun County’s jail was out of room.
Meanwhile, the Commissioners formally approved a request from Pollack to hire a temporary clerical employee while one staff member is out for surgery and another has a planned vacation during that time. The temporary hire would not exceed 12 weeks and the pay would be no higher than $14 an hour.
