LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Senate adopted Senate Resolution 142 earlier this month, officially designating October 13, , as Michigan Homeschool Day.
Introduced by State Senator Jonathan Lindsey (R-Coldwater), the resolution honors the state’s homeschooling families and underscores the foundational role parents play in their children’s education.
Lindsey highlighted Section 10 of the Revised School Code, noting that Michigan law explicitly recognizes the natural and fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to direct the care, teaching, and education of their children.
In celebrating the resolution, Senator Lindsey emphasized the alignment of homeschooling with core American values during the nation’s semiquincentennial.
Lindsey said “This year, as we celebrate 250 years of American freedom, it is especially fitting that we honor the principles of liberty and self-determination as they apply to homeschooling,” advocating for educational decisions made with minimal government involvement.
He expressed gratitude to his Senate colleagues for supporting the measure and praised homeschool families for serving Michigan as dedicated educators, community leaders, and advocates.
