UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Village of Union City Fire Chief Dave Hughes says food cooking in a frying pan caused a fire early Sunday morning which led to the evacuation of five units at the Riverbend Apartments in Union City.
The blaze was reported at 2:20 a.m.. Heavy smoke damage was reported in two of the apartments but there were no injuries reported.
The 27-unit complex is located on North Drive.
Union City Village Police and Michigan State Police helped with the evacuation. The Athens and Burlington Fire Departments were called to the scene for mutual aide.
Hughes says the fire was brought under control in about 12 minutes. Firefighters then had to clear the smoke out of the apartments.
Residents were eventually allowed back into their apartments. Union City firefighters were on the job for about 45 minutes.
