Dorothy Mae Swartout, 86, of Union City, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at the United Methodist Church in Union City with Pastor Jayme Palaszeski officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. A visitation will be held from 1-3 PM on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, just prior to the funeral, at the United Methodist Church. The family is being assisted by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation of Union City.
Dorothy was born April 3, 1934 in Coldwater, Michigan. Her parents were Harley and Kathryn (Smith) Stryker. She attended school in Union City and remained close with the members of the Class of 1953 for the rest of her life. On September 8, 1951, she married Lee C. Swartout in Angola, Indiana. The couple had three children together and resided in Union City throughout their married life. Lee sadly preceded her in death in 2013. Dorothy was a homemaker whose life reflected her commitment to family and faith. She was very supportive of her children and the activities in which they were involved, including Girl Scouts, where she served as a leader.
Dorothy was a member of the Union City United Methodist Church and active in its Ruth Circle. She sold Avon for a time, as well as owned a private franchise. She liked her bling and wearing lots of jewelry. She enjoyed adult education and took many courses. She enjoyed crafts, doing ceramics, oil painting, flower arranging and embroidery. Additionally, Dorothy liked to garden, can and cook. She enjoyed playing cards, Sudoku and coloring. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her children, Pattie (Philip) Walter of Union City, Nancy (Leh) Hadden of Burlington and Mickel Swartout of Union City; grandchildren, Jessica (Jesse Naul) Walter of Colorado Springs, CO, Sean (Ashley) Walter of Springfield, OH, Scott Walter of Kalamazoo, Erica (Luke) Magers, MD, of DeWitt, Brandi (Anthony, Jr.) Ramsey of Union City and Dorian (Esther) Swartout of Bluffdale, UT; great-grandchildren, Maxwell Walter of Springfield, OH, Gannon Imhof of Burlington, Reigan Magers and Evan Magers of DeWitt, Quinton Ramsey, Zarah Ramsey and Anthony Ramsey III of Union City, and Jameson Swartout of Bluffdale, UT; sisters Vonda (Richard) Bowerman of Bronson, Shirley Harder of Three Rivers and Jeanette Mercer of White Pigeon; surviving sister-in-law Treva Swartout of Coldwater and brothers-in-law Paul Swartout of Union City and Leslie Knapp of Coldwater; and special caregiver Rosie Inman of Union City.
In addition to her husband of 61 years, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Raymond Stryker; and a grandson, Max M. Walter.
