WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVB) – Seventh District Republican Congressman Tim Walberg joined fellow Republicans and two Democrats in voting against a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid package early Saturday morning but it still cleared the U.S. House 219-212.
The package includes a third round of stimulus checks of $1,400 for eligible individuals. It now heads to the U.S. Senate where it’s expected to be amended and sent back to the House.
Walberg released a statement through his office on Saturday which said, “Let’s be clear: This isn’t a COVID relief bill. In fact, only nine percent focuses on public health measures like enhanced testing and vaccine distribution.”
He and other House Republicans feel the bill is bloated and it’s “riddled with political handouts that have little or nothing to do with combating the virus.”
Walberg went on to say. “Up to this point, Congress has already allocated more than $4 trillion in COVID relief, and $1 trillion of that has yet to be spent. We owe it to our constituents to ditch the unrelated, wasteful spending and focus on delivering bipartisan results. A true relief package should be dedicated to defeating COVID-19 and targeted to reopening schools, rebuilding a healthy economy, and helping those most in need.”
