EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The pairings for the upcoming boys and girls basketball districts have been announced by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
Under a seeding format which is being used for the second time by the MHSAA, the top two seeds are in opposite brackets which guarantees they won’t face each other until the district finals. A random draw is held for the teams not seeded first or second.
The top two seeds are determined by a computer formula called the Michigan Power Rankings which is just like the RPI rankings used in college basketball.
Coldwater is the second seed in the Division One boys basketball district at Sturgis. They drew a first round bye and will face the host Trojans at 5:30 p.m. on March 25. Gull Lake is the top seed for the district and will face either Battle Creek Central or Battle Creek Lakeview at 7:00 p.m. on the 25th. The two Battle Creek schools will play each other in the first game of the districts on March 23. The district championship will be on March 27. The winner advances to the regional tournament at Grand Ledge.
In the Division Three boys basketball districts at Centreville, Bronson will play White Pigeon and Quincy will take on Union City in the opening round on March 23. Top-seeded Reading will play the winner of the Bronson-White Pigeon game while second-seeded Centreville will play the Quincy-Union City winner on the 25th. The district finals will be on March 27.
Coldwater will be hosting a Division One girls basketball district. The host Lady Cardinals will host Battle Creek Central in the opening game on March 22 at 7:00 p.m.. The winner plays top-seeded Gull Lake at 7:00 p.m. on March 24. The first game on the 24th at 5:30 p.m. will have second-seeded Battle Creek Lakeview take on Sturgis.
Bronson got a number one seed in the Division Three girls basketball districts at White Pigeon. After getting an opening round bye, the Vikings will play either Marcellus or Centreville on March 24 at 7:00 p.m.. The first semifinal on the 24th will have second-seeded Schoolcraft face White Pigeon.
Quincy and Union City will be in the Division Three districts at Concord. Quincy will play Reading in the opening round on March 22. The winner plays top seeded Concord on March 24 at 7:00 p.m.. Union City will play top-seed Homer at 5:30 p.m. on March 24.
The district finals at all three girls basketball district sites will be on March 26.
