BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Pennfield Panthers cut down the nets Tuesday night as they won at least a share of the 2021 Interstate 8 boys basketball title with a thrilling 44-41 victory over the Coldwater Cardinals.
The win gave Pennfield a conference record of 11-1 and they own the tiebreaker over Coldwater as they have beaten the Cardinals twice this season.
It was the first time this season Coldwater has lost back-to-back games as their record dropped to 12-3 overall and 10-2 in the Interstate 8.
Pennfield controlled the first half as they built a 26-18 lead.
Coldwater stormed out of the locker room and dominated the third quarter by a 14-5 margin to take a 32-31 lead into the final nail biting eight minutes.
Trailing 42-41, the Cardinals missed a shot to take the lead with 12 seconds left. Pennfield’s stingy defense forced Cardinal turnovers on the next two possessions. Ryne Petersen hit a pair of foul shots with three seconds left to seal the game and the conference title for the Panthers.
Brandon Downs scored a game-high 15 points for Coldwater. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Nate Tappenden had nine points while Spencer Rodesiler had eight points. Aiden Burns led Pennfield with 14 points while Luke Davis added 12 points.
