COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Zoning Text Amendment to regulate non-household Animals within the City’s residential areas is now in the hands of the Coldwater City Council following action Monday night by the City’s Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission voted 6-1 in favor of the proposed changes that will add two new definitions to a section of the zoning ordinance covering Farm Animals and Hobby Animals.
Language was added on how to handle existing animals.
Commission member Jessika Cole cast the only no vote.
Commission member Aaron Garn was in the majority who voted in favor.
City Planner Dean Walrack said in his report the change will enable a limited number of Hobby Animals such as chickens and rabbits on residential properties, including residential uses within commercial or industrial districts. The draft as written will also allow up to two bee hives on these residential properties. The enclosures would be subject to 15 foot setbacks from all side and rear property lines. Farm Animals will be allowed to be kept only on properties zoned A-A One-Family Agricultural.
In other business on Monday night, the Planning Commission approved a request from Jason Salinaz to use the one-story commercial building at 87 West Pearl Street for a single-family residential use. The building was the former location of the Snip-Itz Salon and the property is zoned C-2 Central Business District.
