FREMONT TOWNSHIP, IN (WTVB) – A Fremont, Indiana man lost a portion of his right leg when his motorcycle was sideswiped Tuesday afternoon as part of a three vehicle crash which forced a portion of State Road 120 west of Fremont to be shut down for over two hours.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened at about 4:26 p.m. in the area of County Road 125 East.
Deputies determined a Harley Davidson motorcycle being operated by 28-year-old Cody J. Ormsbee was trying to turn left onto 125 East from 120 when he was sideswiped by a 2018 Dodge Journey that was being driven by 32-year-old Ericka J. Pillitiere of Fremont. Pillitiere told deputies she never saw the motorcycle.
Ormsbee was ejected off the motorcycle and landed on the road. The motorcycle was pushed into the westbound lane of 120 where it was struck by a 2014 Hyundai Elantra being driven by Paul J Federspiel of Fort Wayne.
The Sheriff’s Department says as a result of the crash, Ormsbee’s right leg was severed just below the knee. He was able to stand up and hobble off the road towards another vehicle which had stopped to render aid. A nurse was driving the vehicle and she applied a tourniquet to Ormsbee’s leg to stop the bleeding.
Ormsbee was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne via the Samaritan Helicopter where at last report he was in stable condition.
Pillitiere and Federspiel were not injured in the crash which is still under investigation.
Assisting at the scene were the Fremont Police Department, Steuben County EMS, Fremont Fire/Rescue, the Angola Police, Samaritan Helicopter, Steuben County Communications and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
