MATTAWAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Republican candidate for Governor Garrett Soldano still doesn’t have the financial war chest of the current Goveror, but did announce this week he has raised over $600,000 since jumping into the race in late April.
Soldano, a chiropractor from Mattawan, says over 10,000 contributions came in from across the state of Michigan in the 83-day period. Of those contributions, 97% came from Michigan and 94% were under $200.
On Tuesday, the campaign to re-elect Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced it will file a record-shattering fundraising report with $8.5 million raised and more than $10 million in cash on hand. This represents more money raised by any Michigan gubernatorial candidate in an entire non-election year.
Soldano co-founded the organization “Stand Up Michigan” to protest Governor Whitmer’s COVID policies, and also served as co-chairman of the Unlock Michigan campaign, the grassroots effort to limit the Governor’s emergency powers.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig continued to be unclear about whether he is definitely a Republican candidate for governor during a Thursday morning radio appearance.
Appearing on the Paul W. Smith Show on WJR-AM, Craig did not dispute the host’s assertions that he is now in the race, but he did not explicitly say he is a candidate, as he appeared to do during a Wednesday night national TV interview
