COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A project that aimed to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in the community was the victim of vandalism earlier this month.
The Coldwater Police Department is investigating the theft of 13 flags from the Early Bird Exchange Club’s Healing Hill of Hope. The theft was discovered as the service club was taking down the month-long display adjacent to the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence’s Shelterhouse on North Michigan Avenue. It’s believed the flags were stolen earlier in the month.
A total of 177 American flags and 46 child abuse flags had been flying to pay homage to child victims in Branch County. Three child abuse flags were among those taken. The flags were purchased through fundraisers sponsored by the Early Bird Exchange Club.
Early Bird Exchange Club member and BCCADSV Executive Director Kim Hemker said, “While some might think this is just a foolish prank, we know each of these flags represents a child and the trauma they endured.”
“If it was a prank, we ask that you return the flags with no questions asked.”
Anyone with information on the flag theft is asked to contact the Coldwater Police Department.
If you wish to donate to replace the stolen flags, contact Patsy Karbon at (517)227-2758.
