MATTESON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A lightning strike was apparently the cause of a fire that resulted in about $6,500 worth of damage to a residence northwest of Bronson on Sunday night.
The Bronson Fire Department was called at about 7:20 p.m. to the 900 block of Burr Oak Road after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the overhang in the rear porch area of the house.
The passerby told the occupants to get out of the structure as it was on fire.
Bronson Assistant Fire Chief Ken Stutzman says when fire crews arrived, smoke was evident in the back porch eave and overhang area and was quickly extinguished by fire personnel.
In addition to the fire, Stutzman says power lines were down at the same address and Consumer’s Energy was requested to come to the scene.
An ambulance was also requested at the scene to check out the home occupants.
Some strong storms went through Branch County at around 6:00 p.m. Sunday night which led to several power outages. Power was out on the east side of Quincy for about four hours.
Consumer’s Energy customers at Palmer Lake and in the area of West Colon and Kane Roads were still without power at midday on Monday.
