ADAMS TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Bureau of Elections has taken away Adams Township Clerk Stephanie Scott’s responsibilities for next Tuesday’s election.
The office of Hillsdale County Clerk Marney Kast will supervise next week’s township election instead.
The Bureau of Elections says Scott was removed from election duties after she failed to comply with legal requirements from the state to ensure the safety and security of the election.
According to a news release issued by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office, Scott was accused of not allowing state contracted preventative maintenance on voting equipment by Hart Intercivic, Incorporated.
Scott told the Detroit News she has tussled with the state Elections Bureau over security concerns she has with the township’s tabulators.
Scott was told in a sharply worded letter sent to her last week by Director of Elections Jonathan Brater, ” Your past statements, detailed in prior letters, indicate that you are unwilling to fulfill your responsibilities as clerk, and you have failed to confirm that you will fulfill them in response to recent correspondence.”
Benson said, “The voters of Adams Township expect, deserve, and have a right to have their election carried out in accordance with all state and federal laws. I am confident that the Hillsdale County Clerk’s office will administer the election in a manner that ensures that it is legal, transparent, and secure.”
