COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A presentation was made during Thursday’s Branch County Board of Commissioners work session about the county using a grant program to help fund the purchase of land on Corn Island so that it could be used for a public park and recreation.
The project has been discussed for almost a year-and-a-half.
Josh Zuiderveen from South Peat Environmental of Rockford said this purchase would involve over 27 acres of land.
He talked about a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant program that would allow municipalities to purchase and or develop property for a public park land.
There would be a 25 percent local match. Zuiderveen says the land was appraised at about $1.1 million.
As part of the process, a public hearing was scheduled for the Commissioners work session on March 3. They would then vote on a resolution to pursue a grant on March 8.
The deadline to file an application for a grant is April 1 and the county should find out sometime in December if it was approved.
