COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater BPU Board of Directors approved the renewal of a contract on Thursday night with Sexton Farms to haul and land apply biosolids.
The CBPU has contracted with Sexton Farms for the last three years to remove and land apply biosolids from the Water Resource Recovery Facility.
The utility in prior years had used a third party contractor from outside of the region.
Coldwater BPU Water and Water Resource Recovery Facility Superintendent Brian Musselman says since April 2021, Sexton Farms has removed 2,616,000 gallons of biosolids from the WRRF’s digestors which were ultimately land applied on various farm fields.
(Officials say the cost to remove and land apply the biosolids was $65,400 which was a savings of over $71,000 from the prior contractor.)
By continuing to use Sexton Farms, CBPU officials feel they will be able to haul throughout the year when the fields are available, as opposed to a specific time frame subject to the weather.
In addition, they say the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) has been happy with the success of working with a local farmer to land apply the biosolids.
