QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The occupant of an apartment was rescued Wednesday night by Quincy firefighters when a fire broke out in a Quincy apartment building at the intersection of U.S. 12 and Arnold.
The Quincy Fire Department reports they were alerted to the fire at 6:46 p.m. as Quincy firefighters were in the middle of a training drill at the firehouse.
Crews arrived on the scene within three minutes of the alarm.
They found smoke showing from the single story multi-family dwelling.
Crews forced open the apartment door and quickly found the lone occupant of the apartment where the fire took place within the thick smoke.
The occupant was moved to safety where crews started CPR.
The patient quickly regained a pulse and began to breathe on their own. The fire was quickly knocked down and kept to the apartment of origin.
US-12 was closed for the duration of the fire as supply hoses were stretched across the roadway.
The patient was taken to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital by Life Care Ambulance and later flown to Kalamazoo for further treatment.
As of early this morning, the patients condition is unknown.
Although the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental in nature, the incident is under investigation by the Quincy Fire Department with the assistance of Quincy Police and the Coldwater Fire Marshal.
Firefighters cleared the scene by 9:00 p.m..
Coldwater firefighters responded by automatic mutual aid. Also assisting were Quincy Police, the Michigan State Police, Life Care Ambulance, Branch County Victim Services, The Red Cross, Consumers Energy and Branch County 911.
