BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater opened the Interstate 8 portion of their schedule on Wednesday night by losing to Marshall three games to nothing by scores of 15-25, 17-25, 15-25.
Coach Kelsey Closson said, “I will say that those scores do not represent the fight that we had or how close the score was through a lot of the matches. Regardless, I was proud of girls who had to step into brand new positions, other girls who had more weight put on their shoulders, and the entire team who came out with fire. Unfortunately we just hit a wall every time the score got to around 14/15 points for us. But that doesn’t mean we are going to give up. I know this team, I’ve seen the growth we have had already and know they will continue to fight to get better everyday.”
Mya Porter – 4 aces, 4 kills, 7 digs
Violet Waltke – 13 digs
Jaelah Sloan – 6 kills
Maren DeBeau – 11 assists
Mackenzie Scheid – 4 kills
Bella Carrion – 6 blocks
In the opening night of Big 8 Conference play, Union City had to go five games to defeat Jonesville. The game scores were 21-25, 25-21, 27-25, 20-25 and 15-13.
Coach Ashley Herman said, “We started off a little shaky but once we got the nerves out we were able to settle in and play the way we wanted! We had players that had big nights at the net as well as players who really turned it up on defense tonight. The girls showed a tremendous amount of grit tonight coming back from down 9-12 in set 5 and getting that huge 5th set win! We are looking forward to a great weekend in the gym as we host the UC Classic on Saturday.”
Laynie Elkins had 12 kills and 31 digs for the Chargers. Aislyn Phelps recorded two aces. Gracie Phelps had 26 assists.
