COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council introduced an agreement Monday for the proposed sale of eight acres of vacant land on Treat Avenue to Schmitz Foam which is planning to expand its facility at 188 Treat Avenue which was opened about five years ago.
The company wants to hire 25 more employees as part of the expansion. Schmitz Foam currently has 40 employees.
Schmitz wants to expand onto three lots in the same subdivision that lie across the street from the current facility at a price of $5,000 per acre.
City Attorney Megan Angell says in light of the substantial costs to close that section of Treat Avenue, which under the sales agreement would be borne by the City, the company has agreed to alter its initial plan to build on and across the road.
Instead, Schmitz plans to construct a separate structure on the lots to be purchased if it is able to obtain permission from the Coldwater Zoning Board of Appeals for a variance enabling it to have three “curb cuts” or driveways along the approximately 960 feet of road front.
The earliest regular meeting at which the Council can grant final approval of the sales agreement will be on October 24
