A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Knauss Cemetery.
James was born November 4, 1961 to Robert and Arlene Sweet. He was raised by the Whitmore’s in Battle Creek in a loving home. They provided him with the skills to be independent and a caring person. He came to Coldwater when Mrs. Whitmore’s health declined, and he was reunited with his birth family.
His dream was to live on his own, and he realized that dream and had his own apartment in Coldwater for approximately 10 years. He was blessed to have services provided by loving In Home Support personnel from Adapt.
Jimmy attended Adapt day program for many years. He was happiest when there was work to do in the shop where he packed batteries and tore down boxes. He packed his own lunch and got himself up in the morning and on the BATA bus to “go to work”. He assigned himself the task of helping a vision impaired individual get on the bus at the end of the day.
When Jim’s health declined, he went to Fairview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was lovingly cared for by the staff and was a very popular resident. He was happiest when given a task to perform that would help a staff member. He often expressed how much he loved to help people.
He loved seeing public servants in uniform. On occasion when coming face to face with a police officer he would salute them. He frequently said he wanted to be a Marine.
Jim is survived by his sisters Roberta (Bert) Raymond, Kandy Scott and his brother Michael Sweet. He is also survived by his “best buddy”, Jody Stout; 7 nieces and nephews, 9 great nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents, a foster sister, his brother in laws Richard Scott and Gary Wiley and nephew Richard Scott II.
Memorial Donations may be directed to Animal Aid of Branch County.
