COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Board of Directors was told Wednesday night that the number of vehicles that took part in the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day at the Branch County Fairgrounds was the lowest in at least eight years.
Energy Waste Reduction Manager Bob Granger said there were 121 vehicles from 12 communities that dropped off hazardous waste for five hours on September 25 after there were 200 vehicles the year before.
There were 212 vehicles in 2020, 204 in 2019 and 312 in 2018.
The amount of material collected was also down compared to past years.
The 2022 total came in at 10,808 pounds. That was down from the 16,196 pounds collected last year and the 22,016 pounds that were collected in 2020.
Granger said they are looking at possibly having a collection for electronic waste.
Motor oil was the most collected item this year as 2,764 pounds were dropped off. Solvents was the second highest item at 1,220 pounds followed by fluorescents at 1,141 pounds.
Besides residents in the cities of Coldwater and Bronson and the Village of Quincy, those who live in Algansee, Bethel, Bronson, Butler, Girard, Coldwater, Ovid, Quincy and Kinderhook Townships were allowed to take part this year.
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day takes place annually and gives local residents a chance to dispose of the assorted hazardous waste in their homes free of charge.
