Ruth Marcile Scherry, 91, of Union City, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023 at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Riverside Cemetery in Union City.
Marcile, as she was known, was born June 17, 1932 in Hastings, Michigan to Howard and Mary (Woodruff) Chase. She was a foster child who spent many of her formative years in the Athens home of Phil and Phyllis Crowell.
Marcile graduated from Athens High School in 1951 and married James “Jim” Scherry on October 7, 1951. They made their home in Union City, where they raised three children, Sue, Steve and John. The couple had been married for 67 years at the time of Jim’s death in 2019.
Marcile was a very caring wife and mother and a supportive and non-judgmental person. She babysat for neighborhood children in her home and later worked as a cook at Union City Elementary School and waited on customers at the former Bopp’s Pharmacy in Union City. She liked to work on jigsaw puzzles, write poems and listen to music – crooners in particular – while she did housework.
Marcile also enjoyed traveling with her husband. They were fond of day trips where they drove long distances to go out for lunch. She was a member of the Union City United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children: Sue Wyman of California; John (Leisa) Scherry of Union City and Steve (Ashley) Scherry of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Danny Woodruff, and a half-sister, Rosie McCown, both of California; foster sister, Sheryl Burlingame of Union City; and her caregiver, Rusty Hampton of Union City.
In addition to her husband, Marcile was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Chase and Mary Hall; her half-siblings Darlene, Darrell, Dean and Alva; and her foster brother; David Crowell.
