BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater and Bronson baseball teams scored doubleheader sweeps in conference play on Tuesday.
The Cardinals improved to 4-6 overall by winning two games at Hastings by scores of 11-1 and 16-0.
Coldwater broke open a close first game with a eight run fifth inning that snapped a 1-1 tie. Evan Porter was the winning pitcher thanks to six strikeouts in five innings of work. Owen Tappenden had two hits including a double and drove in three runs.
Second game winning pitcher Dayton Ennis got plenty of support as the game was stopped on the mercy rule after three innings. Ennis recorded seven strike outs. He also had two hits including a triple. Ethan Parker drove in three runs.
Bronson got to the .500 mark and improved to 3-1 in the Big 8 Conference by defeating Reading 18-2 and 9-4.
First game winning pitcher Seth Withington struck out nine in four innings of work. The Vikings collected 15 hits led by Carson Stevens who went four-for-four with a triple and five RBI’s. Max Byler collected a triple.
Stevens was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Spencer Losinski drove in a pair of runs.
Quincy split their Big 8 Conference doubleheader with Concord. The Orioles won the opener 5-4 but lost the second game 6-1.
The Orioles won the first game in dramatic fashion as Jimmy Maynard scored the winning run in the last of the seventh on a throwing error. Ethan Copas had a two run double. Ryan Kempter had two hits and was the winning pitcher in relief.
Sloppy defense in the first two innings of the second game led to six unearned Yellowjacket runs and the Orioles managed just four hits in the game. Mason Graves and Brennen Allman each had two hits. With the split, the Orioles move to 3-1 in Big 8 play and 4-2 overall.
Union City was swept at Maple Valley by scores of 3-2 and 11-1. The Chargers are now 3-6 overall.
Also in baseball on Tuesday, Tekonsha defeated Waldron 10-1.
