COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Police and Fire Departments are investigating what they are calling an arson fire that destroyed a former livestock building Wednesday morning at 100 Industrial Avenue in the city’s industrial park.
The fire was reported at 2:34 a.m.. According to Coldwater Police, the fire was freshly set when it was spotted by a police officer who was patrolling the area. The officer immediately radioed in to dispatch and requested the fire department.
Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said the vacant building was used to store equipment and large totes of motor oil.
He reported the old wooden structure, combined with the flammable liquids, caused the fire to spread quickly.
The Quincy Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance, and the Department of Municipal Services also responded to the scene to assist.
Firefighters were on the scene until 10:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Police report that there have been recent incidents of vandalism in the area and they are requesting the public to report suspicious activities to 9-1-1.
