COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater School Board of Education got an update Monday night on meetings over the past four months concerning what work has to be done to the Coldwater High School building.
TMP Architecture has been working with the district on plans to upgrade the high school which was constructed in the mid 1950’s and expanded in the early 1990’s.
Architects have conducted two walk throughs of the building and a meeting with the high school staff was also held to get their feedback.
Eduardo Blanc from the firm’s Kalamazoo office said they have completed their discovery phase in which they try to understand the building and its needs.
He added they will start what is being called the exploration phase next month which will lead to their recommendation to the board in November.
The district hopes to put a bond question on the ballot in May of 2026. As of now, all of the repairs in the high school are estimated to cost $54 million.
District voters turned down two bonding questions in November of 2021 that would have funded an expansion of the high school as well as renovations.
A $53 million bond proposal that would have been used to fund improvements and upgrades at C.H.S. and other buildings in the district was voted down six months later.
In other business, the Board approved the hiring of Robin Swartz as the new Coldwater High School Dean of Students effective this school year.
A posting for the position said the Dean will be responsible for supporting a positive school culture by overseeing student behavior and attendance initiatives.
Swartz had been serving as a Coldwater Police Department School Resource Officer. The new S.R.O. will be announced at a later time.
The board also approved the appointment of Jeff Schorfhaar for his 13th season as the Coldwater High School football coach. The appointment was needed since Schorfhaar has retired as a teacher after serving in that position for 33 years.
