COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Personnel from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were in Coldwater Thursday, seeking what was described as “a limited number of specific individuals.”
Coldwater City Manager Keith Bakers says at 4:48 a.m. Branch County Central Dispatch was notified of the presence of ICE personnel in the community. He says the City of Coldwater was not notified in advance of the federal operation.
Baker says based on the information currently available, ICE does not intend to maintain a long-term presence. Because this is a federal law enforcement matter, he says the City has no further information regarding the nature of the operation.
According to Baker, questions regarding ICE’s activities or immigration enforcement should be directed to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency or the appropriate federal authorities.
Earlier this week a 20-year-old man living in Coldwater and working at the Clemens Food Group plant on Newton Road was accused of Open Murder in the stabbing death of a co-worker at the facility. He is currently lodged at the Branch County Jail but has also placed on ICE hold.
