ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – Trine University officially opened its highly anticipated “Thunder Dome” athletic facility on Thursday, providing a massive new climate-controlled space for student-athletes.
The 70-foot-tall, 92,000-square-foot inflatable stadium features a regulation-sized football field.
The $7 million structure features artificial turf, modern locker rooms, scoreboards, and four redundant air-pressure monitoring systems.
Trine Athletic Director Andy Rang says not only will the Thunder Dome benefit current Trine athletes but it’s also expected to help land future athletes as well
According to Trine University President Tony Kline, the dome offers a faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar buildings while ensuring elite accommodations for athletic training.
Kline says they hope to involve surrounding communities in activities that can be held in the dome
The state-of-the-art venue primarily solves a temporary campus displacement, housing athletes year-round while the university’s historic Hershey Hall athletic facility undergoes extensive multi-million dollar renovations.
