BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Kyler Economou poured in 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Quincy Orioles won at Concord 56-46 in a Big 8 Conference boys basketball game on Friday night.
Quincy led 12-7 after one quarter and 26-21 at the half. Concord came roaring back with a 19-14 advantage in the 3rd to cut the Quincy lead to 42-40. The Orioles used a 14-6 fourth quarter to seal the victory which was sparked by 7 for 10 free throw shooting in crunch time. Besides Economou’s big night, Sam Sawyer played his best game as an Oriole as he scored 14 points. Kyle Rodesiler also grabbed five rebounds. The Orioles are now 3-1 overall, 2-1 in the Big Eight. They travel to Sand Creek for a 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Sand Creek will be allowing up to 250 spectators.
In other Big 8 Conference boys basketball games involving Branch County squads, the Union City Chargers snapped a three game losing streak with a 44-28 home court win over Springport. The Chargers led 9-6 after the first quarter and 24-12 at the half. The defensive struggle continued into the third quarter as Union City built a 35-17 lead. The Chargers led by as many as 20 points in the final quarter. Kyle Johnson scored a game-high 18 points for the Chargers who are now 2-3 overall and in the Big 8.
Bronson lost a heartbreaker at Jonesville 45-42. The Comets built a 24-18 halftime lead. The Vikings rallied for a 17-10 third quarter to grab a 35-34 lead which set up a nail biting finish. The Vikings were down three points and had one last possession with 12 seconds left. But a three point shot attempt was blocked and the Comets were able to dribble out the clock. After winning their first two games, the Vikings have lost four straight including two one-possession games.
