Sally Jane Swartout, 81, of Union City, passed away at home on Sunday, April 21, 2019, under the care of her family and Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
A memorial gathering will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the family’s home, 478 W. Girard Road, Union City. In case of inclement weather, it will be moved to the Tekonsha Church of God, 985 N. Main Street, Tekonsha. The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation of Union City.
Sally was born on February 6, 1938 in Jackson, MI, to Marie Lippert. She grew up in Jackson County and graduated from Concord High School in 1956. On November 22, 1958, she married Paul Swartout in Calhoun County. The couple resided in Union City, where they raised their six children together.
Sally worked for Wash King Laundry for nearly four decades. She also delivered the Coldwater Daily Reporter and Coldwater Shopper’s Guide for many years, worked on Hoff’s Vegetable Farm, planted tomatoes for the Hull, Vahs and Stanton families in the Union City area and worked at the restaurant in Union City, under its various names.
When not working, Sally enjoyed playing BINGO at the American Legion in Orland, IN, collecting horses, salt and pepper shakers, going to the races, watching her son Rick race, attending her grandkids’ sporting events, going daily to the restaurant in Union City for coffee, and going up north to the Ludington area with family. When she was younger, she loved going roller skating.
Sally is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul D. Swartout; her children, Debbie Leland of Coldwater, Cindy Swartout of Coldwater, Wendy (Gene) Inman of Union City, Rick (Terri) Swartout of Union City and David (Amy) Swartout of Sherwood; 12 grandchildren, Irene and Mike Edwards, Matt Leland, Brenda Inman, Wendy and James Gay, Brittany Inman, Bradley and Nicole Inman, Noel Swartout, Paul Swartout, III, Alysha and Mike Mullen, Ashley Swartout, Alivia Swartout and Cassie Swartout; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Savana Edwards, Mason, Marcus and Miles Leland, Aundrea and Octavia Gay, Leo Inman, Hunter Mullen and Cassandra Swartout; and her dog, Cinnamon.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Lippert and her son, Paul E. Swartout, II.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.
