Anthony A. “Tony” Terry, 65, of Union City, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 15, 2019 at his home under the care of Heartland Hospice.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
Tony was born on May 16, 1953 in Moulton, AL to Hector and Ludie Terry. He was the youngest of eight siblings. Tony lost his father when he was only two and had to leave school after the 10th grade to care for his ailing mother. Eventually he moved to Michigan to care for a sister who was having health problems. It was in Michigan that he met his wife, the former Clara Hyder, in 1990. They married on June 12, 1995 in Bronson, MI.
Tony was a jack of all trades who lived and worked in several areas, from an orange grove in Florida to grocery stores in Michigan. Tony excelled at Southern cooking, making the best chicken and dumplings around and an extra special pineapple, banana split cake. He loved cooking for family and friends and taking care of people in general. He was friendly and made friends everywhere he went.
Tony was a jokester, but also someone of deep faith. He leaned on it heavily after he became disabled 20 years ago following damaging some of his vertebrae in a fall. He also suffered from bone deterioration.
Tony attended church as often as his health permitted and was a huge fan of Gospel music. God came first in his life, followed by his wife and then the rest of his family. He told everyone, “When the good Lord’s ready to take me home, I’m ready.” He knew where he was going.
Left to cherish Tony’s memory are his wife of 23 years, Clara; his children, Jeanna Terry of Georgia, Justin (Sherina) Blett of Ft. Polk, LA and Dave Terry of Union City; grandchildren Sophia and Aleah Blett; and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lighthouse, PO BOX 161, Union City, MI 49094 to help with final expenses.
