COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved the special assessment roll for the maintenance and improvement of downtown city parking lots on Monday night.
The Downtown Central Business District City Parking Lot Maintenance and Improvement Program will collect over $66,000 in annual assessments from downtown businesses for the next four years which is about $9,000 more than the last assessment in 2018.
The parking lot maintenance program is renewed every four years by the city.
Neighborhood Services Director and City Assessor Debra Sikorski-Bernath said Monday’s public hearing was the last step in the process.
Downtown Coldwater business owner Jeanni Lint expressed her displeasure to the City Council on October 24 about the current assessments as she pointed out there have been some changes since the Wilber’s Furniture store closed.
Sikorski-Bernath said in her memo to the Council that any concerns have been reviewed and a few adjustments were made to the final roll. She added all parties have had ample notification, and been advised of their rights to an appeal.
Collection of the special assessment will begin on Thursday and then will be conducted annually on the winter tax billing through 2025.
