COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved requests Monday night to establish a pair of No Parking zones.
One would be on both sides of South Clay between U.S. 12 and Pearl Street, with the other on the west side of Butters Avenue between Garfield Road and the railroad tracks.
The South Clay No Parking Zone came about after nearby business owners raised concerns about congestion.
City Manager Keith Baker said parking was previously prohibited on that portion of South Clay.
Michigan Department of Transportation criteria for Major Streets states that traffic lanes must be 12 feet wide and have an additional
eight feet to allow for parallel parking. At the current lane width of 12 feet, on-street parking cannot be accommodated on that portion of South Clay.
MDOT criteria for Major Streets also affects part of Butters Avenue where a construction project took place between Garfield Avenue and Race Street this summer.
The segment of Butters between Garfield Avenue and the railroad tracks was previously an open shoulder where parking was available.
But the shoulder has been eliminated and replaced with curb and gutter on the west side of the street.
The No Parking order was issued as the redesign does not meet MDOT minimum widths or characteristics.
