LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan House Democrats Tuesday introduced a five-bill package aimed at protecting food access for the 1.4 million state residents facing the potential loss of SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown.
The proposed legislation includes creating a $900 million emergency fund to temporarily cover the loss of federal SNAP funding, as well as providing $12.5 million each for the Food Bank Council of America and food pantry programs.
Two resolutions within the package also urge federal officials, including President Donald Trump and the USDA, to either end the shutdown or ensure the continued distribution of SNAP benefits.
