COLDWATER , MI (WTVB) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer does not want a repeat of 2025 when it took lawmakers until October 7th to get her an $81-billion Fiscal Year 2026 budget to sign.
Whitmer said last week the House and Senate need to reach a budget deal and get it to her by June 30 for her signature.
State Senator Jonathon Lindsey (R-Coldwater) says that may be easier said then done.
Lindsey says one issue is the $645 million dollars that is currently under litigation after being recalled by the house, Lindsey says it was part of bringing spending under control leading to a lawsuit from state democrats who want to keep spending the money.
Another issue that could get in the way of finding the path to a budget will be that revenue projections will be well short of what was anticipated.
Lindsey says to find a balanced budget there will need to an increased since of fiscal responsibility among lawmakers at the statehouse.
