UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Union City is planning to conduct a half hour electric power outage next Saturday morning, November 6 for all village customers so that new equipment can be installed.
The outage that morning is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. as the old substation will be taken off line.
The Village will then switch over to a large diesel generator unit that will run the entire Village electric grid for one to two weeks as the Village finishes the new substation and switchgear.
The Village is replacing the aging five megawatt electric substation and the 100 year old switchgear with a new 10 megawatt system.
These systems deliver all of the Village’s electricity outside of what is generated by the Riley Dam.
It was stated on the Village’s Facebook page that the Village is exceeding the current abilities of the aging equipment and large parts of the old system are failing.
The village experienced a massive system failure on July 20 which led to a nine hour power outage.
