STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – The Indiana State Police will be joining law enforcement agencies from across the Hoosier State to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely during this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, impaired driving and fatal crashes spike this time of year. In 2021, 190 people throughout the nation died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in the holiday travel period ranging from the day before Thanksgiving to the Monday after.
The issue is made worse by Thanksgiving Eve, also known as “Drinksgiving” or “Blackout Wednesday.” On that day, there is an increase in over consumption of alcohol.
“The night before Thanksgiving has become known as one of the bigger drinking ‘holidays,’ said Lt. Chad Larsh, ISP Bremen Post District Commander. “We understand people wanting to get together and have a good time, but we want everyone to make it to the Thanksgiving table. Celebrate responsibly. Don’t drink and drive and have a sober driver.”
Officers will be on the roads watching for impaired drivers. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead to get home safely by designating a sober driver or by using public transportation or a ride service like Uber or Lyft.
Never drive impaired or let friends get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking.
