COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The number are in from Branch County’s annual scrap tire recycling event that was held on Saturday.
County officials say 1,310 unwanted tires were removed from local properties.
Funded by a state EGLE Scrap Tire Grant and organized in partnership with the Van Buren Consevation District, the free drive-thru collection operated out of the east parking lot of the Animal Control facility in Coldwater.
Over the course of the four-hour event, a steady stream of 143 vehicles passed through the gates, averaging approximately 9.16 tires per vehicle, just under Michigan’s strict legal limit of 10 passenger tires per vehicle.
The day’s operational success was perfectly split across two transport units stationed at the facility. Trailer One took the bulk of the load, collecting 748 tires from 80 incoming vehicles, while Trailer Two securely packed away an additional 562 from 63 vehicles.
County officials thanked residents for their compliance with safety rules, noting that keeping these discarded passenger and pickup tires out of ditches and illegal dumping zones heavily minimizes area mosquito breeding grounds and fire hazards.
