READING TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The shooting of a man and his dog on Wednesday night by a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department deputy at a residence south of Reading is being investigated by detectives from the Michigan State Police First District Special Investigation Section.
The State Police issued a news release on the incident at midday on Thursday. They say the deputy responded to a dog at large complaint at a residence in the 6500 block of South Edon Road at about 7:45 p.m..
When the deputy got to the residence, he was immediately attacked by the dog and bit. The deputy then shot and killed the dog.
The owner of the residence and the dog was upset at the deputy and the State Police say he confronted the deputy with a knife. The man was then shot by the deputy and died from his injuries.
The deceased man was identified as 32-year-old Oscar Herrera who was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy has seven years of law enforcement experience and was treated at a local hospital for the dog bite injuries.
The deputy is on administrative leave in accordance with protocols for such incidents by the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department. The name of the deputy is not being released at this time.
A knife was recovered at the scene. A final report will be turned into the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
