MATTAWAN, MI (WTVB) – Essam Ahmed and Ahmed Norman scored first half goals and Dawood Gabry had one in the second half as the Coldwater High School boys varsity soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-2 win Saturday at Mattawan.
Ahmed scored on a free kick from 20 yards out with 5:05 to play in the first half to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, and then Norman scored with 1:26 left before halftime on a rebound off a shot from Liam Clark, who picked up the assist.
Mattawan narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a goal with 33:50 to play in the second half off a corner kick, but Gabry scored 44 seconds later on a header from a Yaseen Abdulla pass.
The Wildcats cut the margin to one again on a goal with 2:06 to play in the game, but the Cardinals were able to hold them off the rest of the way for the victory.
Franky Ramos made four saves in goal, as Coldwater and Mattawan each had 10 shots.
Coldwater finished the regular season at 12-6-1, while Mattawan closed at 11-5-1.
The Cardinals will start the postseason by hosting Charlotte for a first round district game this Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
The Coldwater junior varsity team finished their season Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Mattawan.
